The first draft of the causeway dates back to 1883, when Engineer Pedro Tejada León was asked to create a “Triumphal Arch” that would not last long. For this purpose, the materials to be used were wood, cardboard, plaster, among others. The engineer did so, and the result was more than satisfactory.
It was so well received that people decided to make it again, and by 1896 it was made of quarry stone, with the idea that it would represent the city and serve as an entrance to the city on Francisco I. Madero Street (previously called Real de Guanajuato).
